Information about Alaska
The Last Frontier

Capital: Juneau

Discovered in 1741 by Vitus Bering, Alaska is a massive state, spanning one fifth of the continental US.

There is a small island in Alaska called Little Diomede, and on a clear day, someone standing at the highest elevation can see Big Diomede, an island which sits in Russian territory. So as unbelievable as Sarah Palin’s quote was, it stands true: ‘You can actually see Russia from land’ in Alaska.

Of course, there are many other sights to see in Alaska, many of which people travel from all over the world to view. Alaska, also known as The Last Frontier, has the largest coastline of any US State. In addition to a large coastline, Alaska boasts a variety of mountain ranges, lakes and glaciers, making it a highly popular tourist attraction, both by land and by sea.

Alaska is ranked second in the nation for crude oil production, and most of the state’s revenue comes directly from the extraction of petroleum. The fishing industry is also very important to the economy and harvests millions of dollars worth of fish and seafood each year.
