Information about Delaware
The Diamond State

Capital: Dover

As the first state to ratify the United States Constitution, Delaware proudly earned the nickname 'The First State'. It has a rich history starting with the Dutch colonizing in the 1600's, who were then forced out by the British and the Duke of York. It was finally able to declare its independence from British rule in 1776.

Today, Delaware still thrives from its large agricultural output, including soybeans, poultry, corn and dairy. In addition, industrial outputs such as automobiles and paper products provide economic stability for the state.

The government is the number one employer of Delaware, followed closely by education and banking. Vice President Joe Biden was Delaware's United States Senator before heading to the White House in 2009. The mother of the late Bob Marley has roots in Delaware as does Valerie Bertinelli, Ryan Phillippe, Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir, and Henry Heimlich, inventor of the Heimlich maneuver.
