Where to start ?

You can use the templates above, or family tree software to make the process a whole a lot easier, but kids often find it educational and fun to start from scratch.

  • Start by deciding how far back your tree will date, if you are making a small tree from 3 to 7 generations, then you can fit it on a A4 piece of paper. (Be warned if you are making a 7 generation tree, it is a tight fit and needs to positioned perfectly - look at our template for an idea on fitting a 7 generation tree on A4)
  • Anything above 7 generations will definitely need a larger piece of paper or cardboard.
  • Once you have your paper ready, decide on the style. Will you draw the tree vertically or horizontally.
  • If you have a 6 or 7 generation tree on A4, you can run the tree either way but you will need to make sure the paper is upright for a horizontal tree and vice versa. This is because the last branch will be 64 lines or names high. So the longest side of the paper must accommodate the branches.

The process

  • Draw a line and and write your name above, below or beside it, however you want it to look. You can also write your siblings names in the same area if you like since they will be at the same position on the tree.
  • Now draw 2 parallel lines out from this, and mark these as your parents.
  • From each parent draw 2 more parallel lines out and mark these as your grandparents, this will give you a 3 generation tree with your 4 grandparents, great project for young kids to do on their own.
  • To continue, draw 2 more parallel lines out from each grandparent, to accommodate 8 great grandparents.
  • Continue this process for as many generations as you choose, remember each extra generation will take up double the room of the last.

You can add dates such as birth and death, along with the names of siblings and any other interesting information that you can think of. Just remember you will need much more room, you could draw a box instead of a line, and even use photos for a dramatic effect.

Gathering the info

Compile everything you have into your tree and see what is missing, search out the missing information by using names and the area they where born in directories on Google.

Ask relatives for names, dates and any information they have on their ancestory.

Once this is exhausted, you can use the internet, or directories for public records like on our home page, to find even more information about passed ancestors.

Create your final draft, and get it laminated or framed to protect it and finish it beautifully.

Then you can hang it on your wall for all your family to see.

What a great reminder of your family history
