The center has records since 1916.

It costs $17 for a certified copy of an Illinois death record and $10 for a genealogical copy.

Illinois is one of the diverse states located in the Midwestern region in the United States. Lake Michigan forms the northeastern border of the state. Illinois has a varied climatic condition, with hot, humid summers and cool winters. 

Heart diseases are the leading causes of deaths in Illinois. The total deaths recorded in the year 2007 in the state are 100,254. The Division of Vital Records in the Department of Public Health is responsible for preserving and providing a certified copy of Illinois death records. Death records are legally confidential in the state and only the immediate family member of the deceased person can obtain a copy of the record. If any other person wants to obtain the death certificate, he/she needs to provide a letter from the office or agency that requires this certificate. Uncertified copies of the death records are available to the genealogical researchers, after 20 years from the date of event.

In order to obtain a copy of  Illinois death papers, the requestor should complete the application form and submit it to the Department of Public health along with the proper fee. The name of the deceased person, date of death, place of death, parent’s name and the applicant’s relationship with the deceased person should be specified clearly.
