Indiana Death Records IN:

Indiana Public Info

The Indiana Death Records have been recorded on a statewide basis only since the year 1900. Before that, the records were filed with the local health department on a county wise basis. Death records are accessed mainly for genealogical research reasons.

As such, the access to Indiana death papers is not unrestricted. The access is generally provided after you can prove that you are a direct or extended member of the family of the deceased. Legal representatives of the family as well as the first cousins of the deceased can also access the death records. If the record is more than seventy-five years old, then distant relatives such as second cousins can be allowed to view the records. If the death has occurred earlier than that, then a special approval of the State Registrar is required to release the record.

It is recommended that while requesting for a copy of death certificate, you provide enough information for them to be able to provide the correct records, such as the name of the deceased and the date and place or death. Personal information of the requestor such as complete address, contact number, relationship to the deceased and the reason for requesting the death certificate is also required.
