The state of Maine was first occupied by a French party in the 17th Century. But in 18th Century all the European settlements were dragged out of the state due to the American Revolution and the War of 1812. The state of Maine has a population of 1,274,923. This was according to the census which was last taken in the year 2000. The marriage law in the State of Maine requires the newlywed couple to pay a sum of $30.00 USD for a marriage certificate.

All the marriage records are stored in the Office of Vital Statistics. Earlier to access these records one would have to go the office which is located in the Augusta County. That is why it proved to be difficult for some people to access the marriage papers. But due to developing technology in the year 1994, all the marriage records were uploaded on the internet.

The website is portal.maine.gov and to order a copy of a marriage certificate between the years 1892-1922 this website can be used but for Maine marriage records after the year 1923 one has to still approach the Vital statistics office first. From there the personnel might direct you or provide you with a code to access the marriage certificate online. The charges are $7.00 for a plain copy and $15.00 for a certified copy.
