Information about Oregon
The Beaver State

Capital: Salem

What was once known as the Oregon Trail to the settlers, ranchers, farmers and miners who traveled on it for their four- to six-month migration to the Northwest, is now covered by roads and train tracks. Today, the inspirational story can be played out in the computer and cell phone game The Oregon Trail.

The state of Oregon may not be what it is today if it were not for the thousands of settlers who headed west. A 2009 estimate put Oregon's population at 3.8 million, ranked 27th in the US.

Most Oregonians will correct you if the pronunciation of their state is incorrect; according to the residents, it is OR-UH-GUN, not OR-EE-GONE.

Unfortunate for Oregon, it ranks as the leader in forest fires in the United States. Dry areas including semi-arid scrublands and prairies are home to the fire-prone juniper forests and pine trees which are prevalent throughout most of the eastern part of the state.
