Believe it or not you can perform a free reverse phone number look up online. The results are not as good as a paid option, and unlisted numbers won't always show up, but if you are after one result it might be worth a go.

First if you are trying to find who owns a number, type in "phonebook:777 777 7777" without the quotes and replace the number with the number you are searching for.

This will bring up results from Google's phonebook directory.

Results are limited to listed numbers but it is a great first step. You can try closing the spaces or adding hyphens to see if the results change, but it should not matter in the phonebook search.

If this does not work, you can try simply typing the number into google using variations of spaces, hyphens or full numbers to see if the number is listed anywhere in the google directory. If you can too many worthless results, try adding quotes so the number only comes up in order when you have the spaces.

for example using quotes: "777 777 7777"

If this does not work try going to my space and doing a search there, since sometimes people add their number without thinking. You can also try a web site called boardtracker.com that searches forums and discussion groups that google won't search, so you might be lucky and find a result.

If none of these methods work, you may have to resort to a paid version.

Phone look up - Find someone's phone number

On the other side of the spectrum is if you need to find the phone number of a person by name.

In this case, you can search several online directories like the Google phonebook mentioned above, as well as yellow pages and white pages.

If this brings up no results, then the number will be private, and much harder to find.

You can try typing their name into google and seeing if a web 2.0 page shows up like facebook. Or you can go directly to facebook or myspace and search the name there.

If searching Google you may get a lot of useless results, so try adding the town or state they come from, to narrow the options.

It is possible to find an unlisted number this way, but if someone has avoiding posting their number anywhere before then you may have to resort to a paid method.
