Information about South Dakota
Mount Rushmore State

Capital: Pierre

If you are looking for something that signifies the first 150 years of our nation's history, Mount Rushmore in South Dakota offers a larger-than-life memorial. The faces of George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, and Thomas Jefferson are sculpted into the stone and attract a few million visitors per year, helping make tourism the second-largest industry in the state.

A second mountain monument, only 8 miles from Mount Rushmore, is the location of the Crazy Horse Memorial, under construction with a final dimension of 563 feet high and 641 feet wide. In comparison, the average size of one of the Rushmore heads is 60 feet high. It will be the world's largest sculpture upon completion.

A lot of the culture in South Dakota is centered on American Indian, Western, rural and European roots; many annual events are held in celebration of the historical and ethnic heritage. The most notable historical writer of South Dakota is Laura Ingalls Wilder, whose life growing up on the frontier was the basis for her novels.
