Finding Your Family History

You can start by asking your relatives what information they have on their ancestors, as many people will have a good grasp on the last 3 to 7 generations.

Some relatives will have documentation, photos, and even birth records of great grandparents and their grandparents. This will all lead to a good start on a small family tree, and will be the strongest information that you can quickly expand on.

Once you have exhausted your relatives records, it is time to search online for more history.

You can use paid services to speed up the research considerably, but here are some tips to doing it yourself.

You can get some great information by doing a simple name search with the words "family history" or "family tree"

For example search "Lewis family history" or "Brown family tree"

This will give a good starting point, but can also bring up a lot information about other families history.

Another option is to add a geographical term to your search. If your family is predominately US based and you know you came from the south for example, you could add your families name and the state, so an example would be "Jones family history Texas"

You can continue to narrow results by searching for famous ancestors history, or other relatives.
