Information about Virginia
The Old Dominion

Capital: Richmond

Eight US Presidents were born in Virginia, which include four out of the first five, giving it the nickname of “Mother of Presidents”. It is also the birthplace of Pocahontas, June Carter Cash, and Meriwether Lewis. It is home to the CIA, as well as The Department of Defense, and headquarters of Public Broadcasting Service and USA Today.

Approximately 200 miles long and right off the Atlantic Ocean lays the Chesapeake Bay, the nation’s largest partly enclosed body of water, or estuary. Over 150 Virginia streams and rivers drain into Chesapeake Bay and its water is made up of both fresh water, salt water, and brackish water. A large portion of the economy in this area of Virginia relies upon the harvesting of Eastern oysters, which has seen a decline in recent years due to a decrease in oyster population.

Virginia is home to a number of fairs and festivals, including the Virginia Film Festival, the Virginia State Fair, Norfolk’s Harborfest, and the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival.
