Information about West Virginia
Mountain State

Capital: Charleston

Western counties of Virginia broke away from the state during the American Civil War, in which West Virginia then became the 35th state in America. Today, The Mountain State is home to approximately 1.8 million West Virginians, and depending on where you are located, may consider themselves Southerners, although there are also parts of West Virginia in which the residents relate to more of a Midwest culture.

Due to its prime Appalachia location, much of West Virginia’s culture is based around Appalachian tradition, especially folk music, fiddling and ballad singing. Festivals are held each year throughout the state in celebration and preservation.

Coal is a major resource in West Virginia and they are second to Wyoming in national production. The economy as a whole is a weak one, and even attempts at drilling for oil has not had promising results, leaving West Virginia with the second weakest economy in the US.
